Somerset County's population growth over the last twenty years was virtually the same as the State of Maine's, at 13%. Somerset County's industrial and business hub is predominately located in the southern section, mainly in seven communities: Anson; Fairfield; Hartland; Madison; Norridgewock; Pittsfield and Skowhegan.

The southern section of Somerset County Maine is also the location of three major highways: U S Route 2; U S Route 201 and Interstate 95. Two major waterways flow through these seven towns; the Kennebec River and Sebasticook Stream.

A Historical perspective indicates that industry developed along these waterways in these seven towns. Industry and business flourished and brought with it the development of growing communities and population, which continues to the present.
